The Évora University Music Summer Schools are short study courses to be held in Évora, Portugal, between 20th and 31st of August 2007, in cooperation with The Divino Sospiro Association and the Fundação Luís de Molina.
Assembly of Nations
Whats’s in a Name
The title of this project is based on the concept of the Assembleia das Nações Estrangeiras and encapsulates the periferical nature of Portuguese cultural society in regard to the other European Nations. In the XVIII century this assembly of nations was formed by the composer Avondano, from Italian origins, to congregate al the "estrangeiros e nacionais" living or working at that time in Lisbon. In our musical society the "estrangeiro" was (and still is) not a synonym for stranger.
The Évora region, Alentejo, is a testimony of such an influence, acceptance and transformation of the "estrangeiros’s" contributions to our musical society in many historical periods, from renaissance to late baroque and from the classical period to these days. The first "Livro de Ordenanças" by William Say was given to Evora´s Chapter in 1454. Jommeli works are in our archives. A large time scope indeed.
After the 1755 earthquake our "musical memory" the Real Livraria de Música and lot of other Lisbon musical archives perished under fire and water - the Latin version of Sturm und Drang a little bit "avant la lettre". The index of that library alone (the first volume) refers to a huge co-operation (bribes mostly) among European archives. The chronicles of foreigner’s visitors and a lot of other assorted information reveal that there is a huge amount of untapped musical sources to be revealed. For that we have to search it in all the other archives that where preserved. Évora region, Alentejo, has a significant part of musical archives and sources needed to reconstruct the above-mentioned memory.
